Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about training at Expedition BJJ

Getting Started

No! Most of our students start with zero martial arts experience. Jiu-Jitsu is designed to be learned from the ground up, and our beginner-friendly structure makes sure you never feel lost or overwhelmed.

Our instructors meet you exactly where you are — whether you've never done anything physical before or you're already athletic. Every expert was once a beginner, and we take that seriously.

For No-GI classes, wear comfortable athletic clothing — board shorts or MMA shorts paired with a t-shirt or rash guard work great.

For GI classes, you'll need a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu GI (kimono), but we don't expect you to own one for your very first class. Just show up in athletic clothing and we'll get you sorted. Once you decide to train regularly, we can point you toward quality, affordable GIs.

Absolutely not. Jiu-Jitsu will get you in shape — that's one of its greatest benefits. We meet you where you are, regardless of your current fitness level, age, or body type.

Many of our students started training completely out of shape and are now in the best condition of their lives. You don't need to be fit to start. You start, and fitness follows.

Your very first class at Expedition BJJ is completely free. No credit card, no commitment, no sales pitch. Just show up in athletic clothing, introduce yourself, and experience a real class with our team.

We believe the mat speaks for itself — try it once and see if it's right for you.

The easiest way is to show up for a free trial class — no registration required, just come dressed and ready to train.

You can also contact us in advance at 306-515-0566 or expeditionbjj@gmail.com to let us know you're coming. We're happy to answer any questions before you step on the mat.

About Training

GI Jiu-Jitsu is the traditional style where you wear a heavy cotton uniform called a GI (or kimono). The jacket and pants provide grips that are central to the technique — allowing for a more methodical, controlled game with deeper submission setups.

No-GI is faster-paced and done in shorts and a rash guard. Without the grip of the fabric, the game shifts toward body control, underhooks, and leg locks.

Both are valuable, and training both makes you a more complete grappler. At Expedition BJJ, we offer classes in both formats throughout the week.

Belt promotions in BJJ are based on skill development, consistency, and mat time — not a fixed timeline. On average, it takes 1.5 to 2 years between belts, though this varies widely based on how often you train and how quickly you develop.

The journey from white to black belt typically takes 8 to 12 years of dedicated training. We promote based on merit, not time served. Focus on the learning, and the belt will come.

Safety is our top priority. Our instructors emphasize controlled technique, proper warm-ups, and a tap-early culture where tapping is always respected immediately — no exceptions.

Beginners train in structured settings with partners who understand how to go light and help new students learn safely. Like any physical sport, minor soreness is normal when you start, but serious injuries are rare when training is done right. We are proactive about creating a safe environment for everyone.

In many cases, yes. Talk to your instructor before class about any injuries or limitations — we are happy to modify your training so you can still participate and develop.

Many people train Jiu-Jitsu successfully despite chronic injuries, past surgeries, or physical limitations. That said, always consult your doctor before starting any new physical activity if you have concerns.

Yes! We have students who compete at local, provincial, and national levels. Our instructors provide dedicated competition preparation for those who want it — including drilling competition-specific scenarios, strategy, and mental preparation.

Competition is never required, but we support and encourage students who want to test themselves on the tournament mat.

Kids Program

We accept children starting at age 5. Our Little Grapplers program (ages 5–7) focuses on basic movement patterns, coordination, listening skills, and fun — building a love for the sport before introducing technical detail.

Our Youth program (ages 8–12) introduces structured Jiu-Jitsu technique in a safe, age-appropriate way, with regular drilling and supervised light sparring as children develop.

Absolutely. Our kids program is designed with safety as the foundation. We use age-appropriate techniques, padded mats, certified instructors, and a structured class format that prioritizes learning and fun over competition pressure.

Children learn how to fall safely, how to control their bodies, and how to train cooperatively with their peers. Parents regularly tell us it is the safest physical activity their child participates in.

Beyond Jiu-Jitsu technique, your child will develop discipline, respect for others, focus, self-confidence, and teamwork. They'll learn how to set goals, handle failure with grace, and celebrate the success of their teammates.

Parents regularly tell us that the life skills their children build on the mat carry directly into school and everyday life. Many kids become more focused in class, more respectful at home, and more resilient overall.

Jiu-Jitsu gives children genuine confidence — not false bravado. They learn to stay calm under pressure, de-escalate tense situations, and use good judgment about when physical self-defense is truly necessary.

A child who has trained Jiu-Jitsu carries themselves differently. They project confidence without aggression, and that alone changes how others treat them. We teach kids that their skills are for protection — never for starting conflicts.
